MI-V on Ignite!
It was indeed a pleasant surprise to see one of our characters, Wee Teck (best known as WT) on the advertisement of the soon-to-be-launched graphic novel initiative Ignite!
More and more initiatives are being introduced to develop graphic novel in Singapore, spearheaded by the Media Development Authority (MDA), and this gives a hint that this very exciting medium will gain a more prominent feature in the Singapore literary arena.
As creators of the Mystery Investigators-Five, we were honoured to be one of the pioneers of this initiative (as recipients of the 2007 First Time Writers and Illustrators Publishing Initiative in the graphic novel category).
You may view a feature of us on Ignite!’s website here:http://www.ignite.org.sg/ftwipi8.html

Views and Reviews
"Here’s what I liked about the comic:
The local setting was great – nice to see stories set in Singapore. The art was clear and simple, reminded me a bit of Gene Yang’s work in American-born Chinese. The story was fun, seemed suitable for young kids, with an educational element. This kid-friendly story about a group of intrepid young adventurers is filled with interesting tidbits about Singaporean culture and history, and is refreshing for its local setting and accessible art."

"I enjoyed reading the story, and particularly like the interweaving of the history of Singapore into the plot. This is an indirect way of imparting National Education in the readers. The plot is fast-moving, and the target readers will, I am sure, find it a page turner as I did."

"I believe Rhaimie and Rizal did some research for this story - as they’d featured some interesting nuggets of information on Polynesian culture. I appreciate stuff like this, as it adds value to the entertainment."

Dr Gayle Lundgren Whitson on the expanded role graphic novels can play in Singapore's educational landscape:
"This is very exciting and a niche area to be developed in the Singapore literary arena. Your graphic novel meets an important critical literacy need in the age group you’ve targeted as well as in the area of second language speakers – not only in Singapore but throughout the world. It is difficult to find age-appropriate materials for middle grade readers that provide the visual support, yet maintain high engagement and interest."

The Creators - Writer and Illustrator
Currently works as an editor with a local publishing company. Experience in the print and digital media extends beyond 15 years now. My hope of publishing my own work some day became a reality when my brother’s submission and me was picked by MDA in its First Time Writers and Illustrators Publishing Initiative. I have a collection of short writings, mostly children’s stories waiting to be published. I enjoy writing poetry as well. I am inspired by poets like Jalaluddin al-Rumi, Kahlil Gibran, Saadi al-Shiraz etc.
Technical Officer with NeWater. I started drawing seriously only for the past 10 years. I am working my way towards becoming an accomplished illustrator and all this through self-learning – by reading books and now, surfing the Internet, sieving through the vast information that is available. My first big break came when I joined a group of cartoonists. The group published Singapore’s first Malay comic, Tak Kering Gusi. With the same group of cartoonists plus several newcomers it went on to publish two more projects – Gelak Khas and Gelak Khas II. The group was called kARTunIS.
A couple of appearances on Suria followed. The first was a magazine programme – Seri Ramadan. I did a demonstration on how to make a Hari Raya greeting card. The next appearance was on TGIF – doing a 'live' caricature of the hosts Sharon Ismail and Adi Rahman. <>But my most cherished moment, as a cartoonist was my participation in Singapore’s first ever cartoon exhibition, Kartunique. The momentous event took place at Taman Warisan Melayu. I would like to convey my gratitude to Pak Sarkasi Said for having the faith in us to hold the exhibition.Disclaimer
